In a surprising turn, a new problem has arisen for groups hoping to help out homeless veterans with a new home purchase or mortgage refinance. Habitat for Humanity has a budget of $150,000 to help veterans fix up their homes in south Palm Beach County, Fla., but nowhere to spend it, according to a report by The Sun Sentinel.
While some veterans face housing issues after returning home from duty, Florida appears to have little need for new initiatives. According to the Sun Sentinel, the lack of homelessness among veterans in Florida is more likely due to few asking for help.
"Veterans don't see themselves as having a housing need or there are other people out there with a greater housing need," Christopher Ptomey, Habitat for Humanity's director of federal relations, told The Sun Sentinel. "It's a wonderful statement about who they are."
Given their history of service, veterans seemingly aren't responding to Habitat for Humanity's attempts to reach out to those in need of housing. More veterans have decided to purchase a condo in light of new housing trends and rising prices, particularly in Miami, The Miami Herald reported.
